Arista Recovery Welcomes Dr. Subbu Sarma as Medical Director of Kansas Location

Arista Recovery is pleased to announce that Dr. Subbu Sarma, an experienced board-certified addiction medicine specialist will be joining the organization as Medical Director for the Kansas location.

Dr. Sarma, a Chicago native, attended Rockhurst University in Kansas City, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1995. He then attended St. Louis University Medical School, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1999. Dr. Sarma then completed a four-year psychiatry residency at The Chicago Medical School. He has worked in many facets of psychiatry, including hospital settings, geriatric outpatient settings, nursing homes, and eating disorder programs.

Encouraged by senior physicians in 2005, Dr. Sarma attended a conference introducing Suboxone, a novel medication at the time, as a treatment for substance use disorders. Since that time, his interest in the field of addiction medicine grew and he became board certified in addiction medicine. Addiction medicine is now a specialty recognized by the American Board for Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Dr. Sarma offers a patient-centered approach to addiction treatment. He strives to understand the overall background of his patients’ history, not only limited to psychiatric conditions. Dr. Sarma knows that every individual has a unique background and a variety of medical and social elements, which are all important to consider when forming a treatment regimen. This approach is sometimes referred to as a bio-psycho-social model.

As for his decision to join Arista Recovery, Dr. Sarma says, “I was impressed with the campus in Paola, and it is a great environment for a residential program… What I’m most excited about now is the opportunity to be involved in the rehabilitation program and residential component in treating substance abuse disorders”. Dr. Sarma notes that Arista’s residential program is introduced early in treatment and can set the stage for the future of recovery in patients. The first 21 to 30 days in the program is an extremely important element of treatment.

For the determination of patients to get help, Dr. Sarma notes, “The stigma of addiction has significantly decreased within the last 10 to 20 years. This not only results in a better response from the community but also with the patients themselves and their motivation to seek treatment.” Dr. Sarma is confident that Arista’s treatment modalities will give patients the means to carry on their sobriety after completing the residential program.

CEO of Arista Recovery Daniel Jacob is excited to add Dr. Sarma to the team. “Arista is dedicated to providing top care to its patients, and Dr. Sarma’s experience and passion for addiction medicine are exactly what our team needs.”
